The 2018 Big Sit was a big success, despite the low tally of 49 species. Jim Reed, Ed Crawford and Alice Mohrman assembled at first light, but did not hear any owls or other night birds and had to settle for a beautiful sunrise. The birds were pretty scarce all day, but on the positive side, we did get a Philadelphia Vireo thanks to the sharp eyes and ID skills of Jim Reed, our coordinator. Joe Swertinski ID'd a Parasitic Jaeger that was interested in a huge mixed flock of gulls. All day huge numbers of Tree Swallows could be observed in the distance and, on occasion, filled the skies directly overhead. We also identified 3 Wood Ducks on the Bay, a Scarlet Tanager, 7 Bald Eagles, and a Peregrine Falcon. Not a big list of species, but everyone had a lot of fun. Click here for more details and photos.
