SBC Position: NO Restaurant at Cape Henlopen!


Take action! The Sussex Bird Club Executive Committee recently sent the following email to its members:

Dear Fellow Birders, please review the DNREC information regarding construction plans for a 6000 sq. ft. restaurant between the Cape Henlopen State Park hawk watch and the beach bath house [https://destateparks.com/wwwroot/downloads/parkplans/CHSP_Park_Improvement_Update.pdf] The SBC executive committee and many others are opposed to this proposal for many reasons, including: The restaurant is to be open year-round until 10 pm, with live music and a bar and be on or near the sensitive dune. This would create increased traffic, trucks, trash, etc. Noise, light pollution and additional human activity could affect wildlife and birds. The location of the restaurant is too close to the hawk watch and endangered shorebird nesting area at the Point. The decision is scheduled to be made by January 1, 2023, so we need to act now!
